Working for McHugh
What is the process by which a correlator gets offered a project?

A project notification will come from the Vice President or a project manager, and it will include a description of the project, the start and due dates, and the estimated time the project will take. The notification will go to anyone who is qualified for a project, and assignments are based on the responses to the notification email.

Will I be allotted more time for the first few projects that I work on?

You will be given the project deadline and the estimated time will be adjusted to accommodate the fact that there is a learning curve. You will also be asked to complete a portion of the project and then get feedback and implement changes so that you can learn the expectations. In general the first project or two takes longer, and we are aware of that.

What is the average turn around for most projects?

This varies from project to project. It can be a few days or a few weeks. We always give the deadline information when sending out a project notification so people have that information before accepting a job.

What is the average pay for most projects?

Payment rate is determined based on experience. The projects range from 10 to 20 hours on average. If people have more time available they can take multiple portions of a project and increase their income.

Does the company offer any advancement opportunities? If so, what reasonable job titles, responsibilities, and/or full time positions could a correlator foresee as a possible future?

We are looking to add project managers from the pool of people who prove to be excellent correlators. Project manager responsibilities include an array of things, including initiating a project, working with correlators and answering questions, giving feedback and reviewing projects. Full time hours are a possibility for both correlators and project managers given that the workload from client projects is strong enough.

Are correlators expected to work primarily during normal business hours? If we work during the evenings or weekends do we proceed with follow-up communication the next business day when the project manager is online?

Correlators are free to work whatever hours they want, and most in the company do not work traditional business hours. Update emails should come every day you work on a project. The point of updates is to keep communication open, and to make sure that the project is on track. If you know you will not be working on a given day, just let the project manager know. Likewise, if you thought you were going to work and it did not happen, just send a brief notice to the manager. If you know that you will not work a given day, such as Sunday, just let the project manager know.

If a project is estimated to take 20 hours, how many days are given to complete it?

A 20-hour project would likely have a duration of a week and a half, but project loads are unpredictable. You will always have the option to accept or decline a project. We do not consider applicants who do not regularly have at least 15 hours a week available.

When it says “Project assignments are made based on the email responses to project notifications.” does that mean that projects are assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis or are there other factors that influence who gets the project?

We try to balance experienced correlators with new correlators. Also the grade level and subject expertise of those who respond is considered.

The document mentions that work can be somewhat sporadic. Does that mean one project every couple of weeks or one project in a month or longer?

We do not have control over the projects that come in from our clients, so we cannot predict the workload. We have had a heavy workload for the last 7 months and people who have done good work have had their choice of projects. The amount of work you will be offered will vary depending on the subjects and grade levels for which you are eligible.

How many project pieces would a new correlator have to complete successfully to be allowed to complete a full project and how much work do you anticipate to be available for the next year?

We split the projects according to many factors, including the amount of time that we are given by the client and the available time of the correlator. Experience of a correlator is not usually a factor in the splitting of a project.

How many overall correlators and how many math correlators does McHugh & Associates employ?

We have about 30-40 correlators active, though this varies with availability of the correlators.  About 10 are active math correlators. All positions are independent contractors, not employees.

I understand that I will be working as an independent 1099 contractor responsible for my own taxes, etc. This will be the first time I will be working as a contractor, so is there someone in your office that can offer guidance on everything I need to do?

Tracking your hours, income and expenses is the best start. We recommend that you contact your tax professional for further input on this as every person’s situation is different.

Will I be assigned to the same project manager for every project that I am given?

For many subjects we have multiple project managers, so you will not necessarily work with the same project manager for every project.

If I am hired as a freelance employee, will I still be able to do passage searches and item writing work for other publishing companies?

We hire people on a project basis, and you will retain your status as a freelancer, not an employee. We will ask you to sign a non-disclosure agreement but this should not limit your work for other companies.
